What changed

Wayseer notices what changes in the world while you look elsewhere, so you can catch up without watching every lens.

It notes four kinds of change:

  • an entity's status moving to or from warn or worse, such as a host going crit or recovering;
  • entities appearing or going away, but not a module's whole report arriving or leaving, as when it first reports or you turn its source on or off;
  • an entity moving to run on something else, such as a virtual machine migrating to another host, at any status: web-1 moved from alder to birch;
  • events of warn or above.

Those levels are the default; Settings change them.

Changes that come within 10 seconds of each other, alike and of one kind of entity, make one group, such as 3 hosts went crit, or 4 proxmox/vms moved from alder to birch when a host is emptied. When an entity flaps within a group, its last state counts.

The status bar

If a change happened out of view, the status bar says so at its left, after the platform:

wayland · 1.50×   ■ 3 hosts went crit · +2 more     ● demo  ● prom

The line names the newest group you have not seen, and how many others there are. Its mark and color are the worst of them, using the same marks as the rest of the app (Lenses). It fades in once and then holds still. With reduce_motion it appears at once. When the window is narrow, it is the first part of the status bar to go.

A change counts as seen when it happened on something the lens in front was drawing. Once you bring every entity a group names into view, and the view comes to rest, the group is seen and leaves the line. Events that belong to no entity stay on the line. Click the line, or press w, to see the list.

The list

w shows or hides the list of what changed, at the top left of the view. Typing what changed in the palette (Palette) opens it too. Each row is a group: its mark, what happened, when, and the first entities it names, such as:

■ 3 services went crit 4 min ago
  payments-api, checkout, ledger

The time reads just now or 4 min ago within the hour, then as the clock, such as 13:40, with the date if it was not today. Groups you had not seen come first, newest first, with how many are new at the top right. Groups already seen follow, dimmed. Opening the list marks every group seen, so the status bar's line goes.

Clicking a row does what Enter does, and the wheel scrolls. Enter shows the entities that are still in the world in the lens in front: Detail opens the first of them; other lenses select them, and Topology also frames them. The list remembers the group you moved to, so w, Down, Enter steps through the groups one at a time.

Settings

The config's observations section (configuration) changes what counts:

observations:
  show: true # false leaves the news out of the status bar; the list still has it
  least: warn # or info, to count info events and ok statuses too, or crit

With least: crit, only a status moving to or from crit or worse, and events of error or above, count; with least: info, any status change and events of info or above do.
